Low vision can be defined as vision that cannot be restored to normal by surgery or medical treatment; however, it is not total blindness. A low vision evaluation is an opportunity to work with an eye care specialist experienced in caring for people with serious vision impairment. A low vision clinic is held at The Seeing Hand Association, Inc. in Wheeling, West Virginia. The clinic is part of outreach services provided by the West Virginia University Eye Institute. An optometrist who specializes in low vision conducts the eye examinations, and is assisted by a certified ophthalmic assistant. An outreach coordinator conducts an interview about the patient’s specific visual condition, and follows-up on recommendations from the doctor on what optical devices may be available to help the patient utilize and maximize their remaining sight. To schedule an appointment or obtain additional information, contact the Seeing Hand Association at (304) 232-4810 or by e-mail at seehand@ovis.net.
